With more than 2,500 openings in local hospitals, the Triangle is facing a major shortage of nurses.

UNC Health is offering a $20,000 signing bonus to help attract new registered nurses. In the meantime, hospitals are relying on travel nurses and temporary staff to fill gaps in staffing.

Duke and Wake Med are each offering $15,000 signing bonus for registered nurses.

Still, with nurses on the front line of healthcare, it's a struggle to find new nurses and keep the experienced ones from leaving.

Nurses are choosing to not work until corporations respect their license to practice with safe staffing. We don’t have a shortage. What we have is a shortage of respect for the work that nurses do.

Patients and nurses are humans made in the Image of God rather than being commodity. Our society needs to understand that the human is sacred. I’ve heard great things about this organization. If I lived there I would be interested. My hope is that they don’t do something called flex staffing and that they listen to the nurses who request help.
