You're screwed either way with health insurance in the US. Buy it now and it's almost as expensive as a mortgage for some people including myself. Don't buy it and risk having to go bankrupt later should you have an expensive emergency.

There's no way the insurance company is paying the hospital that much for that stuff. They've probably got a special rate not reflected in the bill you were given.
