Do You Live In The Skin Cancer Capital Of The World? | Skin Types and UV exposure

Показать описание
Why is it that one place in the world has the highest rate of melanoma by a large margin? Dr Ankit looks at how your skin type effects your risk of skin cancer and the varying levels of UV around the world.

Main points:
1. There are three common types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and melanoma. Of the three, melanoma is the most aggressive type of skin cancer.
2. The risk of melanoma is influenced by your skin type and the amount of UV exposure in your lifetime. Sunburns are a direct result of damage to the skin by Ultraviolet light.
3. Certain places in the world have high levels of UV exposure, making them melanoma hot spots!
4. The highest rate of melanoma in the world is in the state of Queensland in Australia.

That's what happens when you steal a land you aren't native to. God put people in the region right for them.

Another thing to remember is that Earth is on a slightly elliptical orbit, and as it happens, it reaches perihelion in the Southern Hemisphere's summer. So we actually receive around 6% more solar irradiance during the summer than the north does. This is actually quite a lot. In addition, the upper atmosphere plays a role, and with Australia often having high pressure systems, it gets more sunlight than basically any other country. So yes, it is skin colour, but also nature itself is a large factor.

Finally, you should also take into account the ozon layer depletion above Australia and New Zealand.

if your not of a darker skin tone and you live in a high sunlight area you MUST wear sunscreen, native australian people had darker skin tone to protect from the sun there but with all the light tone people moving there they aren't protecting themselves properly. And even then darker tone people should still protect themselves with sunscreen but its less likely to cause skin damage

You could have just said “people that aren’t supposed to be there are occupying that area”

Thanks for this information. I have always wondering why white Australians use UV sunscreen in AUS, never found a definitive answer to date.

So do the UV index guidelines work for people with darker skin, too? It is recommended to apply sunscreen for a UV index above 3. Is this the case for people with darker skin as well or do they have a higher threshold?

Does this happen similar to eye color? Are light-eyed people vulnerable to UV? Are they prone to cataract than brown-eyed people?

Well if you live in any place in the world with high sunshine just look at the skin color of the original inhabitants, you should have the similar skin color or darker or you should use additional measures (sunscreen) in order not to get skin cancer. If they have much lighter skin then you then maybe you should take some extra vitamin D to prevent lack of vitamin D.

Countries around equator have the highest UV. What is the underlying reason for that? Is it due to Ozone layer?
