Juno’s Final Approach to Jupiter

During it’s final approach to Jupiter, NASA’s Juno spacecraft captured this unique time-lapse movie of the Galilean satellites in motion about the planet. The images were taken 5 days prior to arrival and end when the spacecraft was 3 million miles distant. The innermost moon is volcanic Io; next in line is the ice-crusted ocean world Europa, followed by massive Ganymede, and finally, heavily cratered Callisto.

Getting Juno into Jovian orbit was an absolutely incredible feat. To be only a second out after 5 years and almost 3 billion km travelled is extremely impressive.

Fantastic job by the whole team.

I'm looking forward to seeing the Junocam pictures close to Jupiter.

Jupiter has always been my favourite planet. So much complexity in those clouds just make it fascinating.

Give us a heads up if you find any monoliths there.

It really sucks when you see really cool stuff like this, then you see the people with absolutely zero brain cells in the comment section.

This is unimaginable! Human made object! So far away with HD cameras....

I still want to see the core of either Jupiter or Saturn, maybe Neptune.

Juno almost dipped it's finger into Jupiter's atmosphere, I wonder why there is no closer video of the giant taken.

sorry if this has been asked a hundred times, but does anyone know why there are no stars visible on this footage? I mean if we can see stars at night from earth why are they not showing up in these raw footage videos?

are there any new recent photos of Jupiter?

I believe there is a surface below, and it is spinning faster than the clouds.

What moon was eclipsed behind Jupiter's shadow at 0:12 and for how long?

I wish it was HD quality. It's 2016 not 1996.
Looks like it was taken using a nokia 7650 phone.
I hope they release actual hd videos of the planet later on.

Galileo (the person AND the probe named after him) would've been proud!

Looks more like a tiny fraction of an approach. But at least this time it's not piss poor quality. Nasa has graduated to 20$ 1995 webcam. Kudos.
