What is tourism and how do we define tourism? Well, unfortunately there is no straight answer to this question! Different people, companies, Governments etc define tourism differently, which causes a number of complications and complexities.

In this video I will tell you the most popular definitions of tourism and explain why they are not suitable in the world that we live in today. I will also explain why answering the question 'what is tourism?;' isn't as easy as you might think...

I could define tourism as a phenomenal movement of moving from one place to another for a certain period of time with the aim of having fun, business or any other purposes

In my own term, tourism could be define as a phinomenom that deals with the human experience of visiting one place or the other for the purpose of leisure, home experience, business, education, travel and agro transport for a period of time. (Lemmy 2022)

Tourism can be defined as a voyage of people to landmarks outside their comfort zone driven by the desire to adventure, explore, encounter or observe a new environment and it’s way of life. It is like relaxing and unwinding from your daily life routine to discover, explore, and enjoy new things. But one has to spend money on multiple things, like; accommodation, food, and activities.

For me tourism is something we ‘do’ in our leisure time that is different to our normal routine. It shouldn’t come down to the duration or distance from home. It’s a mindset, it’s our valued leisure time and how we each chose to spend it.

There is a definition by a french author Jean Mistler which is “Le tourisme est l'industrie qui consiste à transporter des gens qui seraient mieux chez eux, dans des endroits qui seraient mieux sans eux.”
I can translate it as "Tourism is the industry that consists in transporting people who would be better off at home to places that would be better off without them"
A bit misanthropic but interesting nevertheless !!!

My definition of tourism would be: Leaving home in search of something that is not a part of your regular routine, with the intention of returning home when you have found it. 'Home' in this context is (house) where you live.
