Simple explanation:
If someone creates a character its literally impossible to whitewash them since they decide the skincolor, if they draw them white that just means they are
Edit: a year later, my prespective has somewhat changed on this. i still think twitter is MASSIVELY overreacting but at the same time hoyoverse was kind of in the wrong tbh. there was no need for them to whiten the skincolor all of a sudden, confusing a lot of people and removing tan/brown rep people were looking foward to

To be fair, she does seem to have a lighter skin tone than in the previous artworks, and it does seem like it is a bit too much of a difference between her being in the shade than being in sunlight.

However, there could be multiple reasons for it. It could just be an artistic preference with the artist preferring that light of a skin tone since it meshed better with the picture (that one is kind of stretching it tbh). Another could be that we underestimated how bright it is, even though I personally don’t think it should be that much difference (I’m not an artist though, so I could be wrong).

Or it could just be a little mistake on their end and the artist didn’t realize it until afterwards.

In the end it really isn’t a big deal. I mean sure, I love a dark skinned cat girl, but having her with a lighter skin tone in one picture isn’t the end of the world, despite how Twitter makes it seem to be.

It’s their brands character, they can do what they want if they want to make her more pale then they can.
She’s unreleased so there is still room for change who knows maybe she’ll come out to be lighter. But they own the rights to that specific character and design, so canonically speaking, that’s what she would look like in that specific lighting.

I'm someone that has the skintone of the character being mentioned here, and, though this might be shocking, we are indeed able to reflect different intensities of light, thus making our skintone change depending on the lighting conditions.



Edit: Oh my god, after looking at the art one more time, SHE'S LITERALLY STILL TAN, THE LIGHTING IS WAY MORE ACCURATE THAN I THOUGH HOLY CRAP.

When one looks at the picture, one can clearly see the style that the artist chose to make the picture has everything watered-down in less intense colors. And while the cat girl is more intense than everything around her, the color of her stuff looks a lot closer to orange than the dark red of her game image. So yeah, the artist definitively lightened her up because she is in the light and maybe added some more lightening for his style, to prevent the cat girl from looking out of place. Or just didn't bother to calculate just how much dark he had to add to make her skin color "perfect".

My untrained eyes will say: lighting does play a part, but it is still probably off by a shade, or two. Since she seems a bit tanned.

My normal brain will say: what is wrong with these people? A shade or two will not kill anyone.

In any case, they probably did that to make it fit with the art style more and these people don’t even care like all they want is the brownie points 🙄

In the end, I think Hoyoverse can depict their own characters how they want to, especially since the game is not out yet, maybe her design changed, or maybe it was a mistake, or maybe that's how the artist drew her because they felt like it. I would say that people should stop being mad over fictional characters and their skin tones, especially if it's an inside "whitewashing", but man, this is actually rlly funny X)
