Making a deity is a process requiring cross-cultural cultivation, desire and the nurturing hand of the maker. Cultivation implies nurture, care and growth. It is also a process of manipulation, a process that pushes soft material to become more pliable, to submit to the force of tools with formal intentions. This monumental space evokes the inner chamber of an invisible temple, containing within it a deity with a six-metre wingspan that is constructed of weavings, rakes, metal colanders, rattan sticks, washers, plastic swords, toy soldiers, beads and metal and plastic ornaments.
Across the floor is an array of rakes and woven belts and textiles that represent simplified versions of lotus petals and flowers (sacred symbols of purity, rebirth and strength). This floor-based assemblage is inspired by rangoli, colourful patterns made on floors by those celebrating Diwali in Malaysia and India in order to welcome wealth and good luck. Cannot Be Broken and Won’t Live Unspoken is totemic, and draws from multiple lineages, melding textiles of the presumed feminine order with hardware of the masculine order. The toy soldiers remind Samat of her childhood, where she shared these plastic toys with her siblings in the family home. Later, she studied the weaving of the songket (woven silk or cotton with gold or silver thread) motif on a table loom, which comprise representations of the Malay worldview. Built on a formal practice of sculpture and weaving, her icons invite devotion driven by desire.
Anne Samat's artwork is now displayed at Aspinwall House, Fort Kochi. The Kochi-Muziris Biennale is curated by Shubigi Rao, open until 10th April 2023.
