Mortismal the major combat switch up for me is aerial combat is vastly improved. Hold dodge then press square to launch cloud in the air and he freaking stays up there. It’s awesome

I’ve spoken about FF7 enough in your comments, so I’d just like to add some appreciation for you here:

I think it’s great that you make a point to clarify when you’re uncertain of things. So many content creators speak with authority, so it really helps with your sincerity that you specify when your memories are hazy. We’ve all been there, it’s just honesty to disclose it.

Ngl Rebirth's combat for me is the best in any RPG I've ever played. It's just so satisfying and immersive. I'll never stop loving this game and I hope Square Enix continues to iterate upon this system for years to come.

In my opinion, this is the best Final Fantasy in 25 years. I have played all single player "mainline" Final Fantasy's since 1997 and FF7 OG is my favorite. I played through the game on PS5, and honestly I was kind of amazed at this game. I hope people who get it on PC enjoy it, it was really special for me.

The original FF7 progression was Midgar -> Kalm -> Mithril Mines -> Junon -> Cargo Ship -> Costa Del Sol -> Mt. Corel -> North Corel -> Gold Saucer 1 -> Corel Prison -> Gongaga -> Cosmo Canyon -> Cave of the Gi -> Nibelheim -> Shinra Mansion -> Mt. Nibel -> Rocket Town -> Gold Saucer 2 -> Temple of the Ancients -> Bone Village -> Forgotten City -> Icicle Inn -> Great Glacier -> Gaea's Cliff -> Whirlwind Maze -> Junon -> Mideel -> Fort Condor -> Mideel -> Underwater Reactor -> Rocket Town -> Cosmo Canyon -> Forgotten City -> Midgar -> Northern Cave

The combat system in Rebirth is one of my favorites that I've ever come across. It was fun in Remake, but they just really dialed it up to another level in this game with the Synergy attacks and fluidity. It already looked stunning on the PS5, so I'm sure on good computer hardware this is really a feast for the eyes! One of the best bits about this one is getting to spend time with the characters and they with each other in meaningful ways.

Rebirth was my game of the year it’s that good. I’ve never played a FF game before and played remake this year and jumped into rebirth and man what a game. Cant wait for part 3

This was my GOTY last year for me personally. The only thing I didn't like was the over abundance of mini games because I always feel like I NEED to do them and beat them regardless of how frustrating they are.

It's great Rebirth added an rpg to accompany the greatest card game since Triple Triad.

Another change in combat you didn't mention is the perfect block though it was introduced in the Remake DLC, but it's a game changer.

Rebirth was my GOTY last year for sure and that was against some pretty stiff competition. As much as I enjoyed Remake, Rebirth was a MASSIVE improvement. I'm not a fan of open world games in general but the tasks didn't feel tedious and actually kept me interested enough to do them all. The only problem I had with Rebirth is that it does this thing that I really hate, where I made sure to 100% everything as I went through then at 80 hours in it said "Fuck you! Now you have to go back to every area again and here's 34523454 more things to do in the Golden Saucer!" basically right before the final mission. As I reach the climax of the story, I DO NOT WANT a bazillion new side things to open up to distract me from the main story. Like, I want to do those things, but it really messes with the pacing and makes no sense contextually within the story. Plus at that point I feel like I'm wrapping it up and it just feels like extra weight on my shoulders. I know I don't HAVE to do them but I WANT to and if they were just introduced in a different way I'd be excited for them instead of annoyed.

Just my 2 cents.

Either way, as I said it was my GOTY last year, even over Metaphor which I thought was amazing and a big improvement on the Persona formula.

I'm interested in hearing your take on the story once you're done. After Rebirth I'm not so sure that there are actually multiple timelines so much as Lifestream shenanigans going on. I don't really keep up with lore conversations much so I'm not sure what the current consensus in the community is though.

Ff7 Rebirth is up there with the greatest experiences in my 25+ years of gaming. It has its flaws for sure with my biggest complain being issues with the plot, but it nails so many other elements like the characters, combat, world design, music, gameplay variety, etc in such a massive scale that makes the overall package a ride that is unforgettable and too good to be true.

Thanks for the video. It's encouraging and discouraging that even in this age we have yet to discover a way to beat Cameraboss. Looking forward to the 100% Onward to 400k. All glory to the algorithm.

I struggled to get into FF7 back in the day, struggled again to get into the remake... but this is making me want to try again. Looking forward to your review and thoughts on it!

157 Gig, I'm starting to miss the days we had Early boot options before decent internet was common.

I've been a JRPG fan for 30+ years - I didn't play a ton of other genres growing up. And over that time I've played all the core FF games, many of the sequels and spinoffs, and any number of games from any number of other franchises; Kingdom Hearts, Star Ocean, Dragon Quest, Grandia, Octopath, Tales, Trails, Ys, Shin Megami Tensei, Persona, Xenogears/saga/blade, Chrono Trigger/Cross, Lunar, Wild Arms, Shadow Hearts, Mother, and Rogue Galaxy (a personal favorite one-off) are just some off the top of my head that I have some amount of experience with, ranging from "comprehensive" to "somewhat dabbled in". And with all of that context, I still maintain that FF7 Rebirth is literally one of the best JRPGs ever made.

Rebirth covers the part between Midgar and the Temple of the Ancients, including the events there.
Can't wait to play the true 2024 GOTY on PC, finally!

My biggest tip, and something that I put off for too long because it was overwhelming, is to learn to use your Synergy Skills. To be clear (because good lord the devs used awful names), I'm talking about the abilities you unlock that you use by holding Block and then pressing one of the other buttons and are free to use. These skills are VERY useful and VERY powerful, AND they increase the ATB faster for *both* participating members.

For some stupid reason, they also named the quasi-limit-break team ups (like the one shown with Sephiroth in your footage here) something very similar-- Synergy Abilities. Those are also incredibly powerful, but are easier to remember to use since they are used from the ATB menu where you have time to do it. But Synergy Skills, a lot of players including myself kind of just go "Oh god that's too much to try and learn all at once" and then just never use them.

Once you master them however, they make the combat even more dynamic and can be so satisfying. They are strong, versatile, and in turn also help you use more abilities faster, which then also gives you more Synergy Ability activations (since you are using more ATB).

As for other thoughts (spoiler free) I think that they did do a much better job with mini-games, I think they accomplished an incredible open world, improved the combat (though it takes a bit to feel comfortable with some of the changes), and really did justice to this world. I won't lie, I actually thought they would not actually do as open of a world as they did, but they pulled it off. There are a lot of great mini games... though for those who want full story-completion sometimes they border on having TOO many. For the plat it is *definitely* too many. Queen's Blood is also a very fun game, I got incredibly addicted to it, moreso than any other FF card game.

It's the first FF I kinda aborted towards the end (I intend to pick it back up soon tho). The open world is filled with voidless, unremarkable fetch quests and I can't overstay how annoyed I am with Chadley and his sister. It's beyond immersion breaking and puts everything to a grinding halt. I DREAD hearing that jingle and being forced to see his stupid face and hear his stupid "look there is a cave nearby!". WHY?! JUST WHY SQUARE?!

So many meaningless ubisoft tier busywork. I absolutely hate it. Huge bummer.

Also Nanaki's voice is just stupid.
