What does it take to drive a city transit bus?

What happens when you put an average driver behind the wheel of a city bus for the first time? Carly Robinson is finding out just what it takes as Edmonton Transit puts her to the test.

I drive a city bus in BC. To make it realistic, you have to put on a few drunks, idiots, and crazy people. That's inside.
Outside, have a few cars cut you off every couple hours, and then have a few jay walkers step out in front of you.
THEN you'll have glimpse into what it's like to drive a city bus. Driving is the easy part.

You also have to watch who's coming on your bus especially at night.

As a bus driver in Indiana for about 3 years you did a good job I have to continually look around my surroundings and watch out for traffic and people cutting me off daily

Driving bus is not easy. There's so many variables and elements and constantly checking your surrounding.

When she applied the service brakes and the bus jerked. That happed to me it takes some getting used.

To me the DRIVING side is easy and become second nature. To watch someone who in her words never sitting in the drivers seat again says it all. It's not for them. Our job comes with a lot of pressures, concentrating, keeping calm, correct positioning, manoeuvring, braking, stopping, speed, planning, clearance of length and width and where I am in the UK with double deckers is low bridges.

Tap on the brake pedal, not stomp. She didn't try kneeling the bus and deploying the ramp, which is best done with the parking brake on.

She says she's never sitting in that seat again instructor says good jobs she's probably still partying from driving that bus in a parking lot with cones and barrels lol.

Besides the clinically insane people inside the bus having angry altercations with an imaginary person.

I also have bicyclists passing me in the right as I pull over into a stop. If I didn't know better I'd think they were trying to kill themselves.

Simply put you need eyes in the back of your head. That's coming from a 34 year vet. Now very happily retired living in the woods hiding from people. LOL
