Easy step by step instructions for tying a surgeons knot in this knot tying video tutorial. Surgeon’s knot. As the name implies it is used by surgeons to hold sutures in place. It is most commonly used as a binding knot although it can be used as a way to join to pieces of line together in fishing. For example tying a tippet to a leader. It is often used in quilting and jewellery making. Can also be used to bind a package. It is knot #461 in The Ashley Book of Knots (AboK) who describes it as the ligature knot. It is related to the reef knot and overhand knot.

I had no idea so many different knots are called 'surgeons knot' or 'surgeons loop'!.
I'm going to have to look it up in Ashley's book of knots. There can't be that many!
