I prefer the recorded version I'd hear on the radio and I highly recommend THAT version. God, what a summer that was: 1968. People not alive then have no idea what Bobby Kennedy meant to so many people. I'll never forget that morning when my brother woke me up for the last day of school and told me that Kennedy had been shot. I went to the kitchen for my bowl of cereal, and my brother and I slurped our cereal while listening to a small radio on the table. Even my mom let down a tear, and she was not a cryer.

Guys I’m so excited that you have Felix on your channel. The Rascals was a seminal band that embodied the 60s decade. I’m 70 years old and was a teenager when all this went down. I was in the 2nd grade when JFK was elected in 1960 and in the 11th grade during Woodstock in 1969 and got to experience everything in between. The Rascals were an integral part of that history. We yearned for freedom. Music called for peace, love and freedom.

Inviting the artists from the past to your show is a gift to them ~ and to us who grew up with their music. It's also a gift to you both ~ you have the artist there to tell you what the songs were about and the history of the times they were created. PLEASE take advantage of that opportunity to learn ~ Love you two so much!

Guys these last three days have been so fun reliving this great time in my life. The Rascals were so much fun, but they were so thought provoking. Just love Felix on that organ and those vocals are fantastic.

I love this song ~ Please take note of the times we lived in during the 1960's ~ ~ John F.Kennedy was assassinated 11-22-63 ~~ Martin Luther King was assassinated on 4-4-1968 ~~ and Bobby Kennedy was assassinated on 6-5-1968. The Kent State (college) shootings were on 5-4-1970. The Viet Nam war ~ Civil Rights ~ Womens Rights ~ These were highly dramatic and radical years of change!

I hope we get back to the days when musicians write songs that comment on bigger issues in life.

my oldest brother used to go and see the Young Rascals play at the barge in Westhampton Beach on Long Island back in the 60's. Unfortunately I was to young to go, but a life long Rascals fan.

Dino Denalli was a great drummer. Felix has such a great blues sierra voice. I'm 72 and still listen to the Rascals.

Awesome!! Felix, thank you for introducing your music to a new generation. Like you alluded to, the message of peace, love, and freedom are as relevant today as it was in the '60s. Every generation has the opportunity to create a positive change in this world. Jay and Amber, thank you for your help in carrying the torch of what these artistic pioneers stood for. Continue to keep the music and the message alive! 💯💜❤️🌎🌍🌏✌️

Great song, still relevant today. What a treat having Felix share his memories of The Rascals and these songs.
When you get back to the Rascals, "A Beautiful Morning", "How Can I Be Sure" and "It's Wonderful" !!!
edit- Felix played keys with his hands and bass with his feet. Guess that's where Geddy Lee learned that trick from!!

As appreciated as the Rascals are, I think they are still under appreciated. Incredible and legendary live performers. Felix is such a brilliant musician.

Felix is being humble -- he didn't mention that this song was #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart for five straight weeks in 1968 (Aug-Sept). That's *huge*, one of the biggest hits that year, and it made a major cultural impact. The Beatles were big fans of the group, and the Rascals opened for them on several dates, including the famous NYC Shea Stadium performance.

This song was one of those great 60's anthems that kept so many of us together. The music was so much of our voices. I still listen and sing along to People Got To Be Free. Thanks Felix Cavaliere‼️

Felix was in Joey Dee & the Starlighters before the Rascals. Their big hits were "The Peppermint Twist" and a cover version of "Shout." "I joined Joey Dee and went to Europe. We were on tour there with the Beatles, and that was before they made it over here. That really started my own little magical mystery tour. After the Beatles made it here, I said to the guys in the band that we should start our own group. I said, “Let’s stop being sidemen.” The thing with the outfits was all at the behest of club owners. Back when we started, clubs required a tie and jacket. If you wanted to work, you dressed up. We tried to find a way around it, like those ridiculous outfits on our first LP cover. Then things changed so dramatically. Audiences wanted us to dress like them, or show them how to dress. Such a transformation, and it happened so quickly.

RFK was assassinated the night of my Senior Prom. We were at the local amusement park for our "Afterglow" a party financed by our high school after Prom when I heard the news. Our whole class was devastated.

You ought to listen to the studio version of People Got to be Free. It's longer than this version and the lyrics are much easier to hear. Thanks, Felix! We love you!
