Why Didn't Vi Know About Jinx? (#Arcane theory) #shorts

Tell me if you think this is a plot hole in Arcane. Vi is in Stillwater for 6-7 years surrounded by underworld criminals (who mostly work for Silco), and somehow she doesn’t hear about a blue-haired girl the exact age of her sister who draws animals and monsters with colorful markers all over every job she does who calls herself JINX aka the last name Vi called her before they were separated? How in the world did Vi not hear ANYTHING about the most theatrical girl criminal in Zaun? Unless she DID hear about her, but there’s another reason she was surprised by Caitlyn’s photos…

It probably helps that silco generally winning the last 7 years and having a cop in his pocket probably means its disproportionately not his guys getting locked up.

Blue hair people in Arcane aren't something special, like in our world. I mean Caitlyn and her father have blue hair too. So even if Vi heard about a blue hair, crazy killer girl that works for Silco it could have been anyone from Undercity. Vi remembered Powder as a complete oposite from what Jinx was. And if Silco's people didn't mention her name then it's very possible that Vi thought that Silco just found himself another Sevika like henchmen.

I think it's a combination of this and the fact that Marcus probably kept Vi isolated for a while. I mean even Silco, with all his connections, didn't even know she was still alive. Plus, I doubt any goon is stupid enough to talk to anyone about Silco and his daughter.

Other explanation is that she asked for a girl named Powder, but they never heard of her because they knew only jinx

Thinking about Vi in prison is so heartbreaking. She was only 15, and yet she gets out and her heart is still so full of love.

Or you know Vi, being the musclehead that she is, just beats up Silco's goons whenever she spots any, no questions asked.

If I remember correctly, I'm pretty sure that Vi was convinced her sister was dead so she must've never even thought that it could be Powder.

Also she didn't so much, talk to the goons... rather spent her time re-configuring them with a lunch tray.
I can't imagine she spent that much time outside of solitary.

I think the look in Vi's eyes when she watches Jinx unload the minigun on fireflies on the tower scene supports this idea. She definitely remembered her as little powder whose bombs did not work and as the girl who would be left behind while others in the group were fighting directly. She couldn't believe how good she is at fighting and blowing things up, opposite of the little girl she remembered. And maybe the reason why she was really shocked at that moment is because it finally clicks the new crazy goon of silco she heard about in prison is her own sister.

She was probably like "wait... Is that.. noooo, no it can't be right? There's no way" and just kept denying that possibility.

I think this goes back to Vi heeding the words of Vander: 'you've got a good heart, don't let that change. No matter how much the world tries to break you.' She's isolated herself into this thought cycle and by extension point in time, just like Jinx still has her childlike demeanor, even though it became twisted. Or simply in all likelihood she's been in solitary most of the time; it didn't seem like there was anyone in cells nearby. So, she wouldn't have much knowledge of developments. Imo, the reason Vi locked in on the monkey design, is it gave her hope/confirmation Powder was alive. Because for all she knew Marcus was right in that he saved her from certain death. So why would Powder have survived that moment, when from her perspective he was holding a knife and walking towards her sister.

"How memories become idealized over time." Ho-ly shit. What a great way to describe that phenomenon.

Another aspect of her imprisonment, which I kind of assumed was the more relevant component -- she's in jail for reasons outside the law, which likely means that she's going to be much more isolated than other inmates, just to keep her from becoming a rumor that escapes to the outside. The hall that Caitlyn is walking down toward Vi's cell certainly seems much quieter than I would have expected, and the warden definitely did everything he could to emotionally isolate her -- likely meaning that she just doesn't interact with other inmates if she can avoid it. The only reason she attacked that big guy is because he tried to stab her on the most traumatic night of her life. Hard to forgive and forget something like that. Even then, it still doesn't seem like she interacted with any other inmates during that incident. And you know for sure that the guards isolated her after that and probably had one of those "chats".

in the information dossiers we got from arcane event in game, Vi kept asking/threatening all of the goons she found worked for silco about powder, the guards hilariously thought this was some drug she was talking about and treated her as a crazed drug addict, but further more the goons never knew her as powder and as such couldn't tell vi anything even if they wanted to, which they didn't because they feared what would happen if they did and silco found out.

A lot of the stuff that’s already said, but I also think it’s worth mentioning that the thing Cait investigated in ep 4 was the first attack she was involved in topside. If Jinx stayed confined to the undercity mission wise, and Piltover doesn’t get involved in chembaron business because of Marcus, there might not even have been a lot of goons that made it to Stillwater where she could have even heard it from.

Also Sevika is the main henchmen- Jinx was very much just a ‘subordinate’ in that regard, since until the attack where Jinx steals the Hex Crystal Jinx didn’t do things independently, hence why she felt the need to prove herself by stealing the Hex Crystal in a large independent heist.

I hope all this makes sense because I always have a problem with phrasing

Also, Vi was impressed how Powder was able to defend herself against Firelight's ambush the moment they reunite, no way she'll make such a connection in prison.

I honestly think that she thought her sister was dead. last thing she saw of powder was silco standing over her, and he was holding a knife. she spent years in there thinking she was dead, and she internalized it as she is the one who got her sister killed. she feels like a hypocrite saying that she wanted a different life for powder than the reality she had to face when she was her age. all of her efforts came to nothing, and it's her fault. powder is never going to forgive me. I don't deserve to be the one that survived this.
truly heart breaking.

so anyway, if she heard any word about this mysterious maniac, she would have never guessed it was powder. especially with the traumatic memories she has of her last moments with her sister, like you said. how helpless she was, how her bombs never worked and wtv. powder is still a little girl she was responsible for, that died because of her in vi's mind

There's actually quite a lot of information about the time Vi spent in prison if you look at the Council Archives/The Warden's Write-Ups.

She pretty much spent ALL of her time hunting Silco's goons and trying to get information out of them about Powder.
It's not entirely clear what were their responses to her but she was clearly unsatisfied with whatever it was.

For example:
Prisoner #982 clutched his hand and let out a yell for help. Pink grabbed #982 by the shirt collar. Pink held #982's upper body over the edge of the roof.

Pink verbally berated and threatened #982. Prisoner asserts that his responses to Pink's questions further provoked her. Pink lifted #982 off the roof, so that only heels of his feet kept him toppling off the side.

Prisoner #982 said something "innocuous". Pink let go of #982's collar.

There's also strong evidence that suggests Marcus kept a tight lid around Vi's imprisonment (even though his name is redacted from the correspondence). It's likely that he was also responsible for her isolation from the outside world.

If Vi can socialize with the criminals in the prison and dig up more information, I don't think she would be that impulsive when she got out.

Or, you know... Solitary confinement for most of her stay. Vi was clearly out of the loop, because she thought Silco was sending goons and cops after her in prison when he didn't know she was even alive. She punches first, then asks questions while punching.

If she did hear about this Jinx, it would probably be at least 3+ years into her inprisonment (as a doubt Powder made a name for herself straight away), and by that point she wouldnt necessarily make the connection.
In the brothel when asking about her she says something like "I thought she was dead but...".
I surely wouldnt call it a plot hole at least, as seems plausible to me she wouldnt have heard of her, or thought it may be Powder even if she did.

Marcus probably kept a lot of Silcos goons out of prison as well, unless they were 'caught on the scene' like the guy Vi beats up.
While Jinx is a colorful character for sure, she's also kind of a loner with no real friends or any social network beyond Silco. The random (non-Silco-connected) criminal in Zhaun who end up in prison doesnt necessesarily know of her at all by the time of ep4.
