Stage director Christof Loy sees these fits of fatherly anger rooted in outbreaks of exaggerated tenderness and a melancholic desire for closeness. Rusalka believes that if she could surrender to the love that she wants to give to her Prince, she would have a soul as the humans do. Relentless in her decision, Rusalka asks her father Vodnik to allow her to become a woman and begs the witch Ježibaba for a spell to enable her to emerge into the human world. Ježibaba affects the metamorphosis with an important exception: the disobedient undine will be deprived of her voice and therefore unable to communicate verbally with humans.
