If you see people in the supermarket thumping pumpkins, crinkling onion skins or rolling dried beans, they may be members of the Vienna Vegetable Orchestra shopping for their latest instruments. Sunday Morning's Martha Teichner got a behind the scenes look at just what goes into their highly unusual, and tasty, musical performance.

The piece doesn't get into it, but after each concert the VVO members wash the produce thoroughly and cook a batch of soup for everyone in attendance, so very little gets wasted in these performances.

As much as half of all the food produced in the world – equivalent to 2bn tonnes – ends up as waste every year. I don't think the Vegetable Orchestra is making a huge dint in that figure for those that focus on that.

I use frozen veg because I throw so much 'was fresh' veg away.
