Why Baggio's Penalty Miss Was Worse Than You Thought

Simply put, Italy go out in the Round of 16 without Baggio. It's an understatement to say he carried the team. He WAS the team

Baggio carried Italy to the final and picked up a hamstring injury in the semi-final. He played the final anyway but was clearly hampered by the injury. Without the injury, I don’t think penalties would have been needed because he had a few chances that he normally would have scored.

I am American and was devastated for Roberto. I was a huge fan of Roberto and this World Cup was still mourning the tragic murder of Andres Escobar. I remember being so scared for him. I always wondered if what happened to Escobar, would happen to Roberto when he returned to Italy. Thank God it did not. Baggio took that team to the final, many people forgot this.

Its extremely unfair to blame Baggio for that world cup loss…. If it wasnt for him Italy would never got out of the group stage. He practically carried the team limping to the finals

If Baggio had scored and Italy won, he would've become immortal. He would be worshipped at the same level as Pele and Maradona. He was an unbelievable player, but because of this miss, he never took the place he deserved in the football firmament.

Baggio wasn't scapegoated for this loss. All Italians knew that he had carried the team the entire tournament, and was playing with a severe injury. Baggio is one player that pretty much all Italians have never stopped loving. It's only the coaches who didn't like him.

Baggio was an outstanding player with Juventus scoring 78 goals in 141 games, 27 goals in 57 games with Italy, and 218 goals in 488 career games in total. More than respectable. It's a shame that he is mostly remembered for failing that penalty, when even the greatest Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have missed penalties at big games.
