IRCC will start accepting 4 new English tests for Student Direct Stream (SDS) beginning August 10, 2023. All tests must be done in person:
1) CELPIP-General (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program)
Score ranges 0-12. Score of 7 in each (listening, reading, speaking, and writing) to pass.
2) CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language) Exam
Score ranges from 10-90. Overall score of 60 to pass.
3) PTE-Academic (Pearson Test of English)
Score ranges from 10-90. Overall score of 60 to pass.
4) TOEFL IBT Test (Test of English as a Foreign Language; Internet-Based Test)
Score ranges from 0-120. Overall score of 83 to pass.
The two existing tests remain:
5) IELTS Academic (International English Language Testing System)
Score ranges from 0-9. Overall score of 6 to pass.
6) IELTS General (International English Language Testing System)
Score ranges from 0-9. Score of 6 in each (listening, reading, speaking and writing) to pass. The difference between IELTS Academic and IELTS General was explained in the official IELTS website.
Not sure if universities and colleges would change their admission policies to match the IRCC language tests.

Presently, IRCC accepts both IELTS Academic and IELTS General. However, some universities and colleges only accept IELTS Academic for admission. As of today, the official Canada website says that you need IELTS score of 6 and above per module (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) to pass. You do need IELTS General for PR.
