How Much Does The Challenger 2 Cost and is it any good?

The Challenger 2 is Britain's 62 tonne beast. It puts super cars to shame with a 26L twin turbocharged V12 engine boasting 1,200 bhp.

It’s main armament is a 120mm rifled gun with 49 rounds stored in the turret and hull. These are usually high explosive squash head rounds with a range of around 5 miles, perfect for destroying fortifications or weaker vehicles. Or they may comprise armour piercing rounds, great for taking out other armoured vehicles. The turret the main armament is mounted on takes 9 seconds to do a full 360.

The Challenger 2 is also armed with a 7.62mm chain gun and a 7.62 gpmg. Additionally it can be mounted with a 40mm automatic grenade launcher, a 12.7mm heavy machine gun or a LEonardo Enforce remote control weapons system.

In terms of protection the tank is covered in chobham armour a highly secretive ceramic composite armour that’s also on the M1 Abrams. This gives extra protection against kinetic energy penetrators and shaped charges.

The tank may also be covered in reactive armour kits and bar armour. On top of this the main gun can fire L34 White phosphorus smoke rounds in conjunction with 5 L8 Smoke grenade dischargers providing visual cover. It also has a neat trick, injecting diesel fuel into it’s exhaust manifolds, producing additional smoke.

However, the best offensive and defensive system in the entire tank is it’s tea maker, providing integral mental reinforcement to those operating it.

When the challenger 2’s were originally purchased they cost £4.2 Million back in 1999

War thunder players think otherwise

Fun fact the Challenger two is one of the few mbts that uses a rifled barrel.

Am I the only one to notice the Decepticon logo at the first 2 seconds? That is genuinely so cool that whoever's higher-up allowed whoever to put that there

Did nobody notice the Decepticon Logo?

Absolutely love the challenger 2 battle tank, work at the Royal Ordinance Factory in the design offices back in the early 90’s when they were in development

In 1985, as a REME Aftificer, these became my babies. I love them.

It doesn't use Chobham armour. It uses the far more advanced Dorchester armour.

Fun fact the reason the Challenget 2 still used a Rifled gun is that the Challenger 2 is a Infantry support tank hints why they still use Hesh a round thats best for taking out Buildings and entrenched positions when air support is unavailable and you dont have time to wait for Artillery however Germany has designed a HE shell capable of doing what Hesh does so they are now switching over to the German made Rhm 120MM L55A1 found on the Leopard 2A7 and 2A8 and this is to be on the Challenger 3

Its coolest feature is still the fact that's it's equipped with an electric water boiler to make tea, making it a deadly, multi-million tea dispenser.

The Chobham armor on the Challenger 2 is called the Dorchester Level 2 Composite armor.

To get hold of one today for free you just need to hang around Donbass and wait for one to be abandoned

just as a lil thing, the challenger can store 50 rounds of 2 stage ammo, also it uses dorchester not chobham (tho techinally dorchester is chobham, but dorchester is the name as its upgraded chobham) oh and the ones you showed was the a bog standard one, a challenger wouldnt look like this on the field as they all have the TES or OES in some config depending on the theatre of operation

other then that good video!

it might weigh 62t but like half of the front doesn't have composite armor (without any additional aemor packages) and can propably be penetrated by stuff like 30mm apfsds from 100m in those areas, also hesh is way more situational than plain old HE-frag so the gun is rifled only to accomodate a gimmick round, add to that it doesn't have any blowout panels and has ammo charges all around the crew compartment, which doesn't end well after being penetrated

Imagine replacing all that armour and weaponry with lightweight carbon fibre copies and leaving Ferraris standing at traffic lights😅

The coax. isn’t a chain gun. It’s a regular MPMG modified to work in the coax. spot. A chain gun is something more like a “mini gun” or rotary cannon.

All of that means nothing when it gets hit with 55kg arty shell....
