Bringing Joker back as an hallucination that only Batman can see through the rest of the game was the best thing Rocksteady did for Arkham Knight. They didn't bring him back to live but he lived on within Bruce (literally because he had the Joker's Blood in him).

I got this death scene when I got shot dead... by a tank. Well, barrage of like 20 tanks to be exact when the GCPD got attacked. So yeah Joker, surviving the funny props you throw at me is way easier than taking 20 tank missiles to the chest.
