Small correction for the video:
I meant to say "Outside Mainland Europe, in the UK" Not "Outside Europe".

Nuclear power plants are the way to go for low carbon emissions and as a backup until better energy storage can be developed. If Europe was ever cut off to natural gas by Russia, I assume the transition to backups like nuclear and securing new trade deals/supplies would come much faster than expected. Russia could have a great deal to lose if this does happen, so it could be a delicate balancing act.

Nuclear is not just "cleaner than traditional fossil fuels", it is cleaner than most green energies: don't forget that producing solar panels, manufacturing a wind turbine and producing a lot of concrete for hydro releases a huge amount of carbon.

The problem is the EU waiting until now to take action....energy dependency didn't originate from the shift to green/renewables. This has been a cronic issue of the whole continent for ages.

Damn, OBF is seriously underrated despite the sheer quality and quantity of videos like this

It still amazes me how Germany are taking down every nuclear power plant that they have... How in the world did it get approved and done?

I do not understand why at the same time of reducing dependency on fossil fuels, they are closing down nuclear energy; a reliable and clean source of energy

I still don't get why Germany is closing down nuclear plants. It's just such a dumb move, and instead they move most of their energy production to coal and gas that they do not own. There's probably enough gas for heating houses, but not for heating houses and generating electricity, so why wouldn't they generate electricity with nuclear and leave gas for heating... I have no clue what's on their agenda, but as an outsider it looks like the worst possible decision

About the reasons the Netherlands is trying to close its gas fields:

- Even though the netherlands is not on a geographic faultline, the north east of the country has been expiencing earthquakes, ruing countless homes. The course of these earthquakes are the fact that the gasfields are being emptied, which results in the land slowly sinking.

- Despite pretence the Dutch government doesn't give a damm about renewable energy, at least not compared to other European countries. More then a decade of righwing VVD/Mark Rutte governments have turned tje country reactionary, with decisions being based mainly on making a quick short term provid (first Rutte government focued on dealing with the results of the 2008 financial crisis and thinking in quick solutions that and up backfiring in the long term have been their way to go ever since). Therefor despite more and more windmills and solar panels appearing in the Netherlands, the country is lagging behind in this area. Therefor "modernising" the Dutch energy production was for a long time not a goal for the government. Finally last year the government said they would close the fields after major pressure from society, but the situation in Russia/Ukraine made it so the Dutch are opening the gas fields once again.

As a Swede, I don’t worry. Yes there are expensive electricity in southern Sweden because it’s more profitable to sell to Germany than suppling locally. This is a political problem that can be mitigated with a Nordic decision to keep the Nordic electricity price under a certain level and export only the rest.

There are huge tax on electricity and fossil fuel that can be made flexible to keep price at a desired level. Today more than 50% is tax.

There are huge incentives to build new production, and there is a lot happening. Finland is getting a new nuclear plant up this year and there are a lot of new wind. Since earlier there are at least 50% hydro power in the Nordic region which is really good at even out when there is no wind.

The politics are going towards new nuclear in Sweden as well, and the Nordic region is the only in the world that have solved the waste problem. (Not as I want it, but it’s there. I’m rooting for 4G nuclear to get far less storage time and make energy at the same time)

Should be added that there are huge industries starting up in Sweden that will almost double the country’s energy need the coming 15 years. Fossil free high quality steel and three giga battery factories are under construction. The Nordic energy market will look very different in 10 years.

The mainland Europe however is worse off. Closing down nuclear in Germany was a too quick decision.

The irony is that the 12% of Nuclear power in Germany has/wil be replaced by lignite!
Germany has very big open pit lignite mines.
Importing Australian open pit coal would be cleaner and more energy efficient then burning lignite.

I'm happy I have a set rate for gas and electric in my contract for 3 years. Best decision of last year.

Short answer:
Polititians asked themselves "what can we do to worsen our current status?";
They conclude: obviously we must close down our energy facilities and become depedent on foreign nations.
Deal!

Me, living in Poland during the fragment that Germany is an issue regarding not having enough renewables :

- Yee Germany bad, nothing to see here <.< (looking at diagram showing that Poland gets 70% of it demand from coal)

TBF the gas field in the Netherlands is nearing (economical) empty and the surrounding area is experiencing a lot of earthquakes because of this. So even though on paper it's a major source untapped, in reality it's not as viable to use anymore (unless in emergency situations).

Intentionally shutting down nuclear knowing that it would only make you more reliant on russia… not a great plan

Actually, nuclear energy can't be "easily turned up and down", it's a stable source of energy, you can't follow the energy curve with a nuclear power plant generation power. You follow the demand for the energy with hydro, coal and gas plants. That's why it's hard to remove them entirely ...

So basically because Europe is embracing the need to fight global warming by decreasing carbon based energy they are giving themselves an extra challenge that other areas of the world will still have to face down the road

It's funny and frustrating when people, politicians talk about clean green energy future but at the same time oppose and shut down nuclear power plants. It's like saying you are going to start living a healthy lifestyle while eating ice-cream and deep fried oreos.
