The main problem with the tobacco industry is the poisons the governments allow to be put into their products. If you look at smokers in the Mediterranean basin where people grow their own without these poisons the health impact is far less severe.

A good stopgap measure between current practices and eventually not growing tobacco at all would be subsidizing crops grown in rotation with tobacco crops. Aside from the many benefits of not growing tobacco (avoiding soil depletion, not creating biohazardous polonium) this would help alleviate current food scarcity and better prepare farmers to deal with any future more catastrophic food scarcity.

This video confuses cigaretes with tabaco.
Also, a lot of research in regards to this plant is a fraud.
