I Cruised Through The World’s Deepest Canal

The captain of our ship had to hand over the controls for us to pass through the Corinth Canal. We had INCHES to spare and sharp rocks under the water, it was incredible.

This is the Corinth Canal, it’s a man-made waterway and the deepest canal in the world. I’ve just disembarked a cruise where our captain had to hand over control of the 37 million-dollar ship that I was on to a local tug boat pilot who would try to pull us through. To make things even more stressful, the Canal had been closed before this for almost two years following a landslide, it had just reopened.

Thanks to the lovely people who let me use some of their footage in this video:

I had so many questions going into this, how did PEOPLE make this, why did they bother and perhaps most importantly would our ship be okay.

It was early in the morning when we approached the entrance to the canal. I’m not normally a morning person but I did not want to miss this. This was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime kind of experience and most of the guests were up on the top deck. We were all so excited to be able to stand outside on the ship as we went through the Canal. I wondered if the walls would be so close that I would be able to touch them and I enjoyed one of the mimosas that was being handed out.

The captain told us that it was too windy for the drones that were planned to film our cruise through the canal. I hoped that the wind wouldn’t cause us any problems, you definitely don’t want this ship to be blown into the side.

I drove over this canal twice this year driving from Athens to the Peloponnese. Beautiful scenery.

Ship claustrophobia to the max. Safe to say, no super cruise ships like the Primo could make it through. Hoisting ships over ground over rocks sounds like a technique that the Vikings mastered.

😮 I'm amazed at how the boat can do that. Quite narrow really the Corinth Canal, an all time historical spot! Unique!

Incredible video, that’s what separates you from other YouTuber’s, different ships and destinations.I always look forward to seeing your next videos.

Amazing to see, mentioned before I missed us going thru it on a less glamorous warship in 1988 as I had just finished a night shift & needed some sleep b4 we docked in Athens to go out! We did get a good photo though! Keep up your excellent work.

Many years ago, I went thru the Corinth canal with Festival cruises' The Azur. That ship was a lot bigger than the ship in this video but it still did fit in the canal.

I remember standing on the road bridge over the canal as a child, after quite a moderate road trip from the Netherlands and I thought the canal was impressive.

Thank you for sharing. Cruises stopping in Athens usually offer a tour to Corinth canal. Looks more exciting to traverse through, than just seeing from bridge.

I'm most impressed by all the candles on board.

I would love to go through this canal one day. It is so beautiful, evocative. In its own way, as dazzling as The Panama Canal. Thank you for the video!

Thank you so much for that video! I came across this canal when I did a recent Holland America cruise to Istanbul. I took a taxi ride over the canal. Truly, a historical spot! Just think about rolling ships across the land…

Here, in the States, a “Spanner” is a tool used to tighten/loosen couplings on firehoses.

I sailed through there in the 80s on a meditation cruise put on by my school . I'm fairly sure that the ship was called The Neptuna an old hospital ship. But it was a long time ago 😂
