Where does 'Do Re Mi' come from? Gregorian Chant Origins (Ut Queant Laxis)

The Ut queant laxis chant starts on successive notes of the scale and is the basis for modern solfege: do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti in Anglophone countries, or here/originally, ut-re-mi-fa-sol-la-si, the last syllable an acronym for "Sancte Ioannes", and for which the note is not actually featured in the chant. "Do" replaced "ut" to be an open sound (rather than closing to the 't'), and "ti" has replaced "si" in some places so every syllable starts with a different letter.
This recording features a do-re-mi drone so listeners can hear the first note of every phrase match up with the major scale.

Souls that are filthy

You were not born yet

Your skeptic father,
Doubting Heaven's promise,
Promptly and fully
Lost all voice and language;
But what was taken,
Ruined past all healing:
Your birth restored it.
