High speed railway/subway systems propelled by electromagnets seems the most practical. Other than that I can not see a large scale shift to a completely new technology for mass transportation that is not in some way or another dependent on petroleum products. What about using fleets of cargo helicopters for the quick city to city travel mainly for the north east such as Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Newark(nyc), Boston. Even stretching into Chicago-Detroit.

Refreshing to hear Engineers talking about more than Level of Service. Veronica hit right on the head: It's about moving people, not automobiles (which, let's remember, were originally just another way of moving people). As a profession, we must move beyond designing solely for the automobile -- it's bankrupting our communities and killing our people.
