The Conference Board's US Consumer Confidence has risen after 3 months of declines, however, some data suggests many Americans are not feeling so positive about the state of the US economy. A Harris Poll from The Guardian shows that 49% of Americans believe the S&P 500 (^GSPC) is down for the year, despite the index actually achieving record numbers in 2024.
Yahoo Finance Senior Columnist Rick Newman joins Wealth! to break down US consumer data and what Americans need to keep in mind about the state of the economy.

Total b.s....consumer confidence is not rising at all. I was at the store a few days ago and noticed many baskets were quite light with only a few necessities in them. People were complaining about prices and how they couldn't afford meat, dairy, etc. To find the "real" news just use your eyes and ears when you go out.

No one likes the high prices on rent, insurance, food and most everything else. The prices will not be coming back down. They will voice their displeasure at the polls.

"The data" just means whatever metrics someone decided to care about. I can show that the economy is the worst it's ever been, if I only include home prices and median wage. I can show that it's the best it's ever been, if I only include TV prices and average wage in Manhattan. What most of us are actually experiencing is that yeah, it's not great. Frozen pizza used to be a cheap dinner, now it's a luxury.

GASLIGHTERS! Monthly inflation that skyrocketed under 1 administration and finally fell at the end of a 2nd doesn’t undo the CUMULATIVE effect.

Think things are 23% more expensive, no? Cumulative

The people saying the stock market is bad and that we are in a recession are too busy at Trump rallies and not watching Yahoo Finance.
