What happens in Vegas ... stays in VR!

This is a really quick photogrammetry scan of the famous Las Vegas sign we made on our trip from LAS Airport to our new home at Boost VC in Silicon Valley – rendered in Unreal Engine 4.

The 3D model was calculated and textured with RealityCapture and uses 190 base photos that we took from multiple angles in about 30 minutes. We are really happy with the result that RealityCapture provides, though the quality could be much higher if we would have taken more time to snap a broader range of photos – but this was just a quick test of the possibilities and the three strange Germans taking closeup photos of the sign were drawing enough strange looks from the tourists there as it is :)

It still feels super realistic to walk through the sign posts – especially the high res textures on the power box look really great in VR!

So, where can this go? I want to visit places I have never been before and may never get to see in reality like climb Everest, or hike the Rocky Mountains, or walk on Mars, or experience live events I couldn't go to like concerts and sporting events. Or simply shop at a mall or walk through Google Street View. Experiencing these things in VR with audio that makes the experience that more real is what I'm looking for. Is this asking too much or can we get there someday?
