Creating Floor Plans from Images in SketchUp - The SketchUp Essentials #23

This tutorial will teach you how to create a floor plan in SketchUp using an image as a basis.

You can also bring an image in of a floor plan if you have an existing plan you’d like to model. For example, I can import this image I have by selecting file, then import, then selecting an image. Make sure you have the box marked image selected when you do this.
You can click once to set a base point for your image, then click again to set the size. Don’t focus too much on that at this point, because we’re going to use the tape measure tool to resize it so that it’s to scale.
To do that, double click inside your image, then use the tape measure to measure the distance between two points that is a known value. Once you’ve measured this length, type in the value you would like that segment to be and hit the enter key. You will receive a message asking if you’d like to resize your model – select yes. You can resize individual components or your whole model depending on which options you select. Once your floor plan is to scale, you can trace your wall onto it. The one thing you may want to do is to go ahead and draw your doors in before you extrude your walls. This way you don’t have to go back and locate your doors after the fact.
You can use the rectangle tool to come back in and create your door frames.

Hi Man, thanks for sharing. I'm working on similar staff, and it is still takes long to make walls (like 20 min or so). I'm thinking of a developing ruby script for automating this kind of routine. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks so much for the content, I did imported an image (jpg) and started drawing rectangle over it to define the floor of the room but when I extruded it, it took the texture of the image as a map! How can I get rid of this texture?

Great video Justin. I have immersed myself into this program for 3 days to learn everything in creating a floor plan. Unfortunately it is too much architectural orientated, and not enough marketing orientated. I need to produce a product that is very good, without spending a lot of time on it. Sketchup can deliver superb results, but it takes way too much time to do it. Believe me - I have drilled down to the core of what this does and how it works. Nevertheless, I must compliment you on your videos. So very well done! And your voice is like a fine bourbon. Smooth, rich, and mellow. Never get tired of listening to you. Your skills are so ideally suited to making videos. Nobody can come close to you in that regard. Keep up the good work!

Hi - I must did something wrong, when I imported a floor plan, measured it out with tap measure and then asked me to resize, then I right clicked to exploded, the whole entire floor plan (including outside the floor plan, the white part turned purple, but your floor plan, only the inside of the floor plan turned to purple), did I do something wrong?
