The original title was Madame Joy, maybe it has something to do with my great aunt who was called Joy and lived near Cyprus Avenue
“My friends, my friends, my friends … who I love, I love, I love, I love,” Philip Seymour Hoffman muttered at the 2006 Oscars, overflowing with nervous joy as he accepted his Academy Award for Best Actor. “You know the Van Morrison song? I love, I love, I love. And he keeps repeating it like that?” The song, of course, was “Madame George,” which the late
"Madame George" is the album's whirlpool. Possibly one of the most compassionate pieces of music ever made, it asks us, no, arranges that we see the plight of what I'll be brutal and call a lovelorn drag queen with such intense empathy that when the singer hurts him, we do too. (Morrison has said in at least one interview that the song has nothing to do with any kind of transvestite - ) (Astral Weeks by Lester Bangs ) from "Stranded" (1979)
Astral Weeks was largely misunderstood in its time, and it certainly wasn’t commercially successful when it came out in 1968. It didn’t chart, failed to produce a single, and according to Walsh, wasn’t even mentioned in Rolling Stone’s roundup of the best music of 1968.
David Bowie presented "Madame George" in his 1969 live repertoire.
“It made me trust in beauty,” Bruce Springsteen once said of Astral Weeks, one of his favorite records. “It gave me a sense of the divine.” the riff that the string quartet repeats at the end of the song is mimicked at the end of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run" (one of several indicators that Morrison had great influence on Springsteen) confirmed by Springsteen himself.
Madame George appears in the "Black Boys on Mopeds" lyrics of Sinéad O'Connor: "England's not the mythical land of Madame George and roses"
In David A. Stewart and the Spiritual Cowboy's song "Out of Reach", from the album Honest, there is a line that goes: "Madame George got played today, she almost forgot she could feel that way"
When asked in an interview which he would choose if he could only listen to a single song for the rest of his life, Harry Styles answered, “‘Madame George’ by Van Morrison”
In 1974, after having recorded eight albums, Morrison told Ritchie Yorke when he asked what he considered his best single song and what he liked best: "Definitely 'Madame George', definitely.
Van Morrison’s ‘Astral Weeks’ Is 50, but It Never Ages (The Ringer Nov 28, 2018,)

Fyi...its about heroin. In the 70's we all knew that. It was common in Europe the use of it. Never liked him but his music is delishishly haunting.
