Fascinating. I’ve never thought about that. Good point

The idea that conflicts must have a ‘reason’ is back to front. Girard defines ideologies as “machinery for legitimating conflict”. We are violent creatures: proximity of itself creates polarity/conflict. Siblings quarrel for no other reason, just as they automatically join against an outsider.

Similarly groups with the highest internal murder rate are the most prone to violent unanimity against external foes. The violence is a *release* of internal dissensions. To that extent continuous with the ritualised violence of soccer which often boils over into real violence especially among non-participant observers/fans.

When Girard talks of violence having “conceptual autonomy” in our culture owing to a judicial system transcending all antagonists, unknown to primitive cultures, anaesthetising us to our own violence, this attitude is what he means. We ‘forget’ God/judicial system in the sense of sacrificial substitutes protecting us from our own violence: that violence is prior to its reasons.

Why was the Holocaust uniquely bad? There were quite a few genocides throughout the 20th century. Why is that the one that sets the standard?

Hitler was an individual but germany was a group of countrymen. Im sorry but you can't emphasize with mass genocide. This argument is wrong in some cases.

That's a load of crap. I understand why the WW2 Germans hated everyone but the Aryans. I certainly don't empathize with them though, and I never will. You never have to empathize with evil to understand it.

Care to check why Ukraine is attacked by Russia. And how you can feel "empathy" towards Russia after. I am from Russia, btw.

Only problem is that it gives equal ground to fascist tyranny and crimes against humanity.

Never ever give these systems the doubt. Lest you apologize for true evil.
