Cleveland Cavaliers • Pick and Pop

It is important to involve all five offensive players in the screen and roll action, not just the ballhandler and the screener.

Cleveland has significant success utilizing the pick and pop but they do not limit themselves to one pass and an outside shot. Each option leads to another and every defender must be aware. Firstly, the ballhandler creates enough separation for passing lanes to open up and to expose the defense. However, the roll man must also make good decisions.
1) Kevin Love passes to LeBron James and sets a screen. Love pops to the top of the key and makes a three-point shot.
2) James Jones sets a screen for James and pops. Anderson Varejão sets a hammer screen when the defender overplays to free Jones up for a shot.
3) Jones sets a high screen for James and pops. There is a switch so Love’s defender must help on the ball. He screens for Jones and there is no help so Jones can make an open shot.
4) Love screens for Mo Williams and pops. Williams reverses the ball to Love. Since Love is a good shooter, James’ defender steps up so he cuts backdoor and receives a pass from Love.
