We have to be honest. There is an inbuilt weakness to democracy. I've recently been reading a book about Ancient Greece and they were talking about it two and a half thousand years ago. The weakness is that it depends on the character and the knowledge of those who vote. The enemy of democracy working well is ignorance and narrow self-interest. It always has been.

As a Canadian, I can't help but look at a lot of the problems that the US have and wonder just how bad the US education system really is. I mean seriously, a very large portion of the weird ideas and conspiracy theories that I hear coming from the south are not things that can survive first contact with an educated and inquisitive mind.

Mr. Blow, your are absolutely correct in everything that you told Lawrence. Thank you for saying what needs to be said now, and has needed to be said for my entire life, 68 years. I have been fully aware what Jim Crow, and the South, and Conservatives have been since I saw it up close in June, 1959. It was repulsive when I was 5, and it is almost worse now in my 69th year on this earth.
