He did say in an interview semi recently that he’s obtained (through his own therapy and just growing older and growing in maturity as we all so) a better understanding and compassion of and for his moms possible struggles and that if he were writing this song today it would have a bit of a different tone to it. But I think at the time he needed to produce it and there are many who have needed to hear it along the way. It’s extremely raw, but sometimes people just need to know they aren’t the only ones who have walked through that pain. He lost her right before graduation. It’s incredibly young and that after watching a struggle for years that you can’t comprehend as a kid/ teen.

Appreciated what you had to say. You’re doing amazing!

I think that because he was a child when he went through this, the pain he felt was very real because as a child he didn't understand.
So although he understands a bit more now, I think this song is talking from the perspective of the abandoned child within him.
also the fact that later understanding doesn't turn back time, the way he felt then is the way he remembers feeling.

I think that logically, he knows that she didn't choose the drugs. But emotionally, as her child, he feels abandoned and like she could've made different decisions to still be there with him. So I think its a matter of emotion vs logic. Dealing with this kind of problem isn't always logical, but this is just how he felt as the child who feels like his mom never knew him

Took me years after my dad died to understand that end point. As a kid.... it felt like I wasn’t important enough. This song brings me to tears every time. Great reaction and explanation of a struggling addict. Big fan of yours already!

Just found u and subscribed. I appreciate your view on addiction and wish more people understood it the way you do. Can’t wait to hear your view on more of NF. This is what is so special about him. So many of us relate. Listen to, “Just like you!” All his songs are amazing! 😊

Nice reaction. :) Nate has stated that his feelings have changed since this track was recorded. That doesn't make this song any less powerful. I can't imagine how painful, yet cathartic this process was.

Therapy session is probably the one that evokes the most emotion out of me. I don’t necessarily relate to all of his songs but I enjoy listening to all of them.

agree with that people usually are not choosing drugs over actual people they love. That said i think the song is just raw reaction to what happened. Young person that loves his mom but sees her "choosing" drugs over spending time with him. Its the anger and view of a person that dont have this problem. He probably knows that it really wasnt fully her fault but the anger/sadness is real

This song is a true masterpiece <3 I think he's mostly talking about how he excatly felt when he was younger. From what I've heard he understands it more now but has struggled with that thought for years and years. Can you imagine feeling like that? Just ouch. :c Ofcourse he'll always carry drugs and his mom with him but he doesnt blame her anymore. Idk where I got this from tho, I think one of his songs or comments lol. And important side note: the crying you hear is real and what you hear at the end (the talking) was him completely breaking down. There was supposed to be more lines but he broke down and they kept that in to be so real and honest with the fans. Its honestly beautiful.

SAD!
Didnt happen to me but i always cry when i hear this song!
As a kid you cant understand that your mom loves you, cause she is not there when you need her.
IMO. Nate brings his child POV in this song.
This is why you see the kids in the video.
I love this dude.
More NF please!

The ending of this when he’s talking he literally had everyone leave the studio so he could do this by himself and let it out. 🥺🥺

I cried for 10 mins straight Jeff. This is a song I literally played at my therapists office….like it hits me more than any song ever made. It’s alcohol for my situation. Ugh the “I think of you when I get a whiff of that cigarette smell…” man he has helped me so much in life. Thank you for the reaction Jeff.

Firstly, I wish you the very best for your family in this difficult time.
NF Is what brought me to your channel but I subscribed because you are such a nice personality and I am happy to be here.
I recently saw an interview where NF explained that he was angry, furious when it happened. When he made this song. It is also rumored that he had to ask everyone to leave the studio to record it because it was so hard. As someone who has lost my dad and felt the frustration with myself of not calling enough or talking to him enough, I can see where that anger comes from, the pain. But NF also said, in that interview, that he's not angry anymore. So I think he did believe that it was his mother's choice at one point, but that is unlikely the case now.

I am a big NF fan so any of his songs are, imo, worthy of being next. But I love 'Change', 'If You Want Love', 'Nate', and 'Why'.

I love NF and this song always makes me cry. Sending positive thoughts to you and your Mom as she battles cancer. I went through cancer with my mom for about 17 years and understand how tough it is. 💗
