If your in a tight spot in a new town, always head for the railroad tracks.
Its under federal law but usually the local cops don't patrol it and you can get atleast a few days rest with litte or no interruptions.
However, if you do see others there. Dont be friendly. Keep to yourself and be quietly stern about it. If your soft, you'll get stolen from. Stay a potential threat and they'll keep their distance.

Usgs (US Geological Survey) mapping, for hard copy out of cell signal delorme and/or benchmark each state is about $20 or so on amazon. Also, you can get area specific maps and regs at the individual unit websites. State and national forests and blm offices.

Which company do you go through for roadside assistance? Do they go way out there if your vehicle breaks down?

Excellent info. Back Country navigator is good but you're right, the learning curve is steep. I need to spend more time with it to unlock the potential it seems. :D

Give Gaia a shot sometime. Really great app, and really good customer service if you ever need it. I’m sold on them.

Excellent job explaining everything. One question I still have is can you camp anywhere on state/federal land or are the rules different from state to state?

Pro tip: when you zoom in on Google Earth and the map is not oriented North up, press the “R” key and it will snap to North up.

Thanks. It's so overwhelming to pull up public lands in Oregon and see so many. Hard to know where to start.

Something people may not be aware of is when using a compass to navigate while traveling the back country is get out of the vehicle. All of the metal and electronics in most vehicles have an effect on a compass. To get an accurate reading on your compass you need to exit your vehicle and step away from it. There are some vehicles that for whatever reason don’t have an effect on a compass. The only way to know for certain is to take readings both in and out of your vehicle multiple times in multiple places. As always it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Cheers mate and happy trails
