Hey Matt, as a reasonably seasoned FM player (and a bit of a tactic connoisseur), I'm noticing a few things that might help you out a bit. As a starter of the game, you're really quite good, I'm sure your previous Fifa experience has allowed you to make the transition easier.

With regards to recruitment, you'll often find that PL players are VERY overpriced for the quality of player you get. Looking in Portugal, France and Italy are some really good players, which will be available for much less. In addition, these players will be more difficult to sign later on, with an imminent Brexit requiring work permits for them. Obviously, you'll want to get in as many of these guys as possible before it becomes impossible to sign them.


In your tactic, I see you're playing an AM behind an advanced forward with inside forwards in support. This is really quite a good system in FM -- it allows your midfielder to augment the midfield, and hand the ball off to the IFs who will carry it forward. However, with a player like Almiron, I'd consider using him as a second striker in your 4231 behind a Poacher. What this will allow is the Poacher to put pressure on the opposition defense, and hold up the ball for Almiron to run ahead of him. That way, you can involve Almiron (as your best player) much more and have the poacher make late runs into the box in case of cutbacks, rebounds or even dragging away defenders.


The other option you could use is changing your formation slightly to a 4123, and use Almiron as a false 9 or trequatista. Then you would be able to switch the two attacking CMs to a Mezzala and a DLP. This will allow the inside forwards more freedom to run ahead of Almiron, and he will be there to either dribble at the defense (which will be distracted with the inside forwards driving at them), or hand the ball off to an onrushing inside forward for an easy goal. I'd convert the defensive midfielder to an anchor or a DM on support (depending on who you are playing). With the DM on support, I'd utilize Almiron as a F9, since you will already have more players in the attack, and don't necessarily want too many people directly attacking the box. The DM on support will push forward as an extra midfield option, and will allow you to "camp" in the opposition half. This allows your team to patiently seek an opening against weaker opposition. An anchor man will allow more security to your backline against tough opposition, and will make the transition much more difficult for the opposition to start counter attacks. With this, however, you will lose some midfield muscle, and so you will want to maximize movement up front, making the trequatista perfect for dropping off or driving forward. It is for this reason trequatistas have to be very mentally strong players -- they need to know whether to drop off or continue attacking, which Almiron is. If you do want to use this system, you should switch the wingback on the side of the Mezzala to an inverted wingback on defend (something I would recommend anyway, and I'll discuss this more in my next point).


An inverted wingback will drive into midfield, and create space for attackers to move forward. In your current 4231 system, you have Shelvey -- a fairly attacking player in a fairly attacking role, an inside forward and a wingback on attack. In the transition, you're going to find that this side turns into a bermuda triangle -- your players are going to go missing, and create easy counterattacking chances for the opposition. With an inverted wingback on defend, your wingback will fill the gap in the midfield held by Shelvey, providing a passing option, and allowing your players to get forward with more security. Alternatively, if you do not wish to utilize IWBs, you could switch Shelvey to a carrilero, who will not get as far forward, but will provide an effective midfield transition, sitting slightly wider and shuttling the ball from your DLP to your AM. Since I have a bit of a love affair with IWBs, I'd still use one here on support duty, and tell him to overlap. This would allow for him to select the best option, whether staying wide, or cutting inside to drive into the channels rather than being a rather one dimensional wingback.


With your GK instructions in the tactic, personally, I prefer having none at all. With most teams in the PL enabling "Prevent short GK distribution", your goalkeeper will find it hard to distribute the ball to your center backs, leading to possible mistakes at the back. I prefer not giving my goalkeeper any guidance on where to distribute, as often, he is the one with the best view of the pitch and can make his own decisions. Sometimes, CPU teams will notice your goalkeeper distributing to a certain area, and mark those players, which is why you should allow the goalkeeper to select his own areas to which to distribute.

Lastly, you should not rely too much on the circles stating players' "role suitability". Those are created by your assistant, and very rarely illustrate the players' best role. The best way to see if a player fits a role is to enter the player's profile and use the dropdown to select the role in which you wish to play the player. It will highlight the necessary attributes for that role, and give a better indication of his real suitability. BustTheNet, a great FM resource, refers to the assistant as the Assman, because the suggestions he gives you will often be quite asinine.


Anyway, these are just my suggestions on how you can improve your tactic, you obviously do not have to follow them. I'm really looking forward to watching your progression through the save, and I think you will truly understand the satisfaction when you win the champions league with your team. It definitely never gets old!

I've only watched the first 3 minutes so far Matt but I think you should've let the takeover happen naturally in game. And just to let you know, never expect a lot of money when you start a save on FM. It starts at the beginning of the season when irl all teams have done all their business, so its realistic that you'd have little to spend. Love that you're doing FM!

Just a tip, you can click on numbers when making offers. So for example if someone has minimum release clause of 10 million, instead of manually typing, you can just click on that number where it says how much his clause is, and it will put that number in your offer.

Matt loving your content as always. One tip I would recommend you not to use the in game editor. Would not want people to accuse you of cheating on the game. Also manually set training for all your players. Make sure they are training and improving the right areas.I would recommend you see and support other FM content creators.
