Example 7 Class 7 Maths Chapter 1 Integers NCERT CBSE by Serve Shiksha

EXAMPLE 7 A shopkeeper earns a profit of  1 by selling one pen and incurs a loss of 40 paise per pencil while selling pencils of her old stock.
(i) In a particular month she incurs a loss of  5. In this period, she sold 45 pens. How many pencils did she sell in this period?
(ii) In the next month she earns neither profit nor loss. If she sold 70 pens, how many pencils did she sell?
Solution - (i) Profit by selling one pen = Rs 1
Profit of selling 45 pens = 45 x 1 = Rs 45
Total loss incurs in the month = -5 (represent negative integer to loss)
Total loss = Profit by selling pens + loss incurs by selling pencils
-5 = 45 + loss incurs by selling pencils
- 5 - 45 = loss incurs by selling pencils
- 50 = loss incurs by selling pencils
If (-40) paise loss incurs in 1 pencils (- represent loss)
Rs (-50) loss incurs in Number of pencils = Rs (-50) / (-40) paise
= -5000/(-40) ( Rs 1 = 100 paise, Rs 50 = 50 x 100 = 5000 paise)
= 125 = Number of pencils selling by the shopkeeper
(ii) Profit of 1 pen = Rs 1
Profit of 70 pen = 70 x 1 = 70
Earn profit = loss incurs (because neither profit nor loss means profit and loss will be equal)
Means loss incurs by selling pencils = -70 rs = -7000 paise
Number of pencils = -7000/(-40) = 175

Pls tell me how it makes (-50)

-5 -45 is equal to( -5)+(-45) so we get(-50) sorry for the confusion
