I have a real-life example of just exactly this. Basically, my brother (18 months older) and myself. He intentionally put himself in the "Slow" classes at school since, and I quote "You don't have to do nothing", while I was always in the "Advanced" class. This went on for decades re: my working full-time while going to college full-time, while he played guitar at night and drank, smoked pot, etc. Fast-forward four decades.... He is 61 and I am 59. We are absolutely, 100% polar opposites, most especially re: $$$$. He works part-time as a contractor on a postal route, and can barely afford his mortgage. I retired from the FDIC (as a capital markets specialist) 3 years ago and work as CFO for a mid-sized credit union. MBA, CPA, CFA Charterholder. As to finances, don't even ask. But, yeah, he "Didn't have to do nothin' !!!!" Yuckety Snort, Yuckety Snort, Guffaw, Guffaw !!!

A very nice quote at the end - The best person to take care of old you, is the young you. I am stealing that :-)

Avoiding unnecessary debt over a period of many years is also a contributing factor.

You hit it perfect with time and relationships!! Tbh im 27 and havent had very many friends and im okay with it. Because while they drink/smoke/go on cruises/etc, im laying low. Im working 2 jobs and going to school for more certifications. Right now is hard and i dont have much fun; but in 10 years I am going to be having an amazing life with no stress while they cry themselves to sleep over their poor life choices. Turtle and the hare. Aim small, miss small. Nothing now so i can have it all later.

I was thinking “caring about other people’s opinion” as #1 but time is definitely key 🔐

Gratification that you think is valuable when you are poor is what you have to sacrifice. I gave up most of it and watched my money grow. I cut way back on the amount of time I wasted. It gratified me but not financially.

Right. Time is also the reason I tune in, apply strategies, and spend my time different now. I don’t want to spend my time doing it later. I want to use my precious time differently in the future, so these minutes and hours invested will someday yield that for me.
