How to: Trident Maple bonsai air layer project

Показать описание
Before Christmas I bought a large trident maple bonsai tree with a view to using it to create two separate trees by using “air-layering”. Air layering is a horticultural process where a portion of an existing tree is encouraged to put out new roots at a selected point so that it can eventually be separated from the parent tree and becomes an independent plant in it’s own right.

Here I walk through the process of air layering and my future design plans for this tree.

Chapters:

00:00 introduction
01:05 The tree. The plan
02:09 Air layering
03:46 Making an air layer
12:09 Outro.

should do well this mate. finding roots in an air layer is one of the highlights of life! Sad but true 🤣🤣

Often, air layering is the last resort to try and make something from an otherwise poor piece of stock so it is nice to hear that you chose this tree with the intention of creating two individual bonsai. You will have two trees which are quite different in style but will compliment each other.

I always include 'keep your fingers crossed' when I give air-layering instructions. Of all my horticultural skills, making air-layers isn't one of them. I hope this works for you, because I think you'll have two stellar trees in time.

Spot on Jason - I normally peek under the tin foil every week. I am just to impatient! Good luck with this project :)

Watched quite a bit of air layering and still haven't found one that describes after car? What if the moss dries out? Do you need to open and water the inside of the bag periodically?

If you applied rooting hormone Jason, you never showed I hope that was the case and that you didn't forget it. The air layer might take ages, if it takes at all without it. I know it can without it, but I just don't know how you missed it in the video. 😅

Can you leave the air layer bag on over winter if the roots don't develop enough (or if you get busy/distracted etc?)
