Today I would like to teach multiple ways to greet in Thai language. Instead of saying “สวัสดี sà-wàt-dee” or “สบายดีไหม sà-baai dee măi”, there are plenty of phrases which you can use to greet your Thai friends.

Much of the confusion of informally using the phrase "sabaii dii mai" (how are you?) -- I think -- tends to stem from a difference between western and eastern cultures...

An old acquaintance of mine from SE Asia who was struggling with English slang observed:
"People here always ask me:
How are you? or How 'ya doin'
-- but then they keep walking and don't even wait for an answer."

My observation has been that among the Thai -- especially when inquiring about one's HEALTH -- they really care, really want to know, and are expecting an answer.

...well, go figure (duh).

When you think about it, this is more reflective of the shallowness of western culture, more than some idiosyncrasy of eastern culture.
