Satie probably listened to this one a million times.

Chopin originally entitled this nocturne "At the cemetery" when he composed it a day after he attended a performance of Hamlet, but erased the inscription when the piece was to be printed, saying: "Let them work it out for themselves."

I especially enjoyed the last two minutes. Pure composing genius.

The middle “religioso” section is pure genius. Sounds like a choir singing a hymn.

Just astounding how one is drawn in to this beautiful composition. All the men were amazing composers...but there is something about Chopin's masterpieces that stroke across the memory like a sadness...

This was used in “The Deer Hunter” as the backdrop of the transition from western PA to Vietnam.

I love that middle part. It really reminds me of Granados and Albeniz. Somebody else understand what I mean?

Classical music is as popular as ever, but its fans have always been a minority - like, say, people who appreciate Shakespeare or Greek philosophy. Those things have quality that lasts as long as there are people who can appreciate it, and musical language is universal. Shakespeare has become hard to understand, but composers of the same period like Palestrina can be appreciated by anyone who is musical. It doesn't grab you by the balls like rock, but there's lots of stuff that's beautiful and farily easy to understand, like this nocturne. Tell your friends about it.

I do agree that that would make it easier, but I fear it would cause some confusion. No one turns the page at exactly the same time, and it might be hard to follow if you weren't anticipating it. Thanks for your comment!

This nocturne is featured in movie 'The Deer Hunter' in the scene just before Mike, Nick and Stephen go to Vietnam. There is great anxiety in this music, an omen of something that cannot be understood, but inevitably must happen.

So very soothing to the soul. Absolutely beautiful, like music from a dream
