Some people say Grindelwald used Dumbledore's feelings for him against him. While true in some capacity, not entirely. When Dumbledore confesses his love, Grindelwald not only knows this, but reminds him that what he's doing was both of their ideas, it was something they wanted to do, together. This is a romantic tragedy. Grindelwald wanted to take over and rule with Dumbledore.

The way the music changed as Grindelwald appears, the smile he gives seeing Dumbledore, the glance Dumbledore returns to Grindelwald, the pickup line Grindelwald says to Dumbledore, and the honest response he gives back. Everything was so gentle. Can't believe this was the first scene from the movie. Just 30s but you can feel so much. Beautiful.

I love this scene, it kind of reminds me of the friendship between Professor X and Magneto despite them being enemies. Of course, here it is former lovers that have become enemies. So tragic but it makes for great storytelling.

Jude law was really able to show Dumbledores suffering and regrets in the movie. You can really feel how they love each other but are unable to be together. I wish they had made Dumbledore the main character and his struggle with his sisters death, his distant brother and his lost friend and lover.

Mikkelsen is basically just playing Hannibal here... and I love it! It suits the character of Grindelwald so well.

Not that I'm knocking Depp's portrayal. His hypnotic charm and subtle vulnerability were mesmerizing.

But Mikkelsen's portrayal just jives with me more. He brings a certain humanity to Grindelwald. He's not a monster doing monstrous things, but rather a human doing monstrous things. And because he's human he is both alluring and terrifying.

I just love that little smile of Grindlewald's at .39 you really do get the feeling of love FROM BOTH SIDES and that both are somewhat disappointed that their views have led them to be on opposite sides. It's subtle and masterfully portrayed by law and mikkleson who have fantastic chemistry here.

This scene deserved to be in a better movie. A movie that explored this tragedy properly and under better direction. A movie that deserves these actors playing these characters as good as they did here.

First time I saw this scene, it giving me Professor X and Magneto vibes. Gellert's talk about their birthrights and it's for greater good and him seeing his own kind as superior than human/muggles, so much like Magneto.
