I think Han's backstory is most definitely worth telling. I mean he was a major character in ANH and even in my eyes, had a redemption arc. Intentional or not, he legitimately mirrored Vader's role in the entire trilogy. He's a stone cold smuggler in it only for himself, then he sees potential in Luke and wants him to join him but of course fails. The point is that Han doesn't believe the Rebellion even stands a chance but realizes his new friends could really be killed. If Han hadn't stepped in to intercepted Vader, Luke would have been shot down and the Rebellion would have been completely and utterly annihilated. There've also been reports that George Lucas himself had the original idea to give Han his own movie.
