Lok Sabha Speaker Election LIVE : The 18th Lok Sabha session, which began on Monday, will witness an election for the post of Speaker on June 26. The person for the post has always been chosen by a consensus between the ruling and opposition parties, but this is the first time since the Emergency that the election for the Lok Sabha Speaker will take place.

Both BJP MP Om Birla and Congress MP Kodikunnil Suresh filed their nominations on Tuesday for the chair after the talks between the two parties failed to reach a consensus. The Opposition had agreed to support the government-backed candidate, Om Birla, under the condition that the deputy Speaker must be a member of the INDIA bloc.
