In this video I will show you how to insulate your garage door and spend under $60 doing it.

I used not typical method of attaching eps foam panels here. Instead of gluing I use magnetic power to hold them.

Materials that I used in this video:

Polystyrene Foam Board Insulation 3/4" x 4' x 8' 4 pieces for a 2 car garage door -

Tools that I recommend from this video:

00:00 Intro
00:06 Tools used in the project
00:18 Magnet power demonstration
01:10 Taking measurements
01:21 Making template to cut holes for hinges
01:57 Cutting eps foam panels
02:29 Advice how to do clean cuts on eps foam
03:00 Attaching magnets to a foam sheet
03:28 Attaching panels
03:56 Final result

Finally a garage door like mine! I think this is the most simplest video I've seen on this type of door, not covering the hinges seems like the best idea to me! I'm trying this! thanks or posting great idea!

Can we get some quantitative results? Great idea, but what did it change?

I actually tried this on my attached garage. but with R-3 0.5 boards from Home depot. I could not find the type used in the video or higher, but didnt want to risk adding weight to my door. I did not remove the plastic paper off them.
I didnt lay plastic layer onto the garage door as a base.

The magnets I couldnt locate so i used the Home depot 1 inch Dia Black Disc Magnet (6 per Pack), the duct tape didnt work as the magnets are not super strong to come through. I couldnt find the ones used in the video. I hot glued the magnets to the foam, I guess its on the plastic layer. Only time will tell if they fall off or rust the garage door.

Cool thing is i can take these down whenever I want as they are not glued to the garage door.

The temp in the garage and the living room adjacent to the garage went up about 5 - 8 degrees while dealing with this cold Chicago weather.

Hello from Upper Hudson Valley NY!
Finally found a video that addresses my type of garage door.
it’s an elegant idea! NOT a solution!
(For all the nay sayers in these comments.)
your idea will start me off with my ideas.
the links you supplied
helped a lot.
I do have a question regarding the spacing between the garage door/magnet/insulation .
Is there a bit of space between the door and the panel for air flow?
Or does the panel lay flat / flush to the door?
(And yes everyone I already know my door is insulated at R6.5.)
I have subscribed off this one vid.
Again great idea!
God bless and keep putting those ideas out so others can try them to!

Did you have to trim it a little bit where the seams meet?

I attempted this but it didn’t take long for the pieces to fall down when the door opened/closed. Disappointed. Do you have any other ideas as to how to “adhere” the foam board to the door?😢

The air-gap created by the magnets is a problem. I would add a sheet of foam padding of the same thickness as the magnets in between the door panel and the insulation panels, and make holes at the locations of the magnets to let them to come through. That way, the air-gaps will be filled.

when the garage door opens and the parts bend did it damage the form?

i do not understand the hate for this project. if you're afraid your garage door opener will break then upgrade to a better door opener with higher HP. This project look like a great idea, I do feel the draft during the winter and heat in the summertime mainly from the garage. Certain this is not a waste of time.

Looks great but I happen to buy the exact same insulation with same thickness and I ordered the same magnets on Amazon but they are not holding.

Do you have an alternative to the insulation you used? The link to menards says, "item not found"

Too bad you didn’t show the garage door opening and closing. Did the panel edges rub up against each other as the door moves and folds?

Your doors were already insulated though. How much r-value do you think was added? Have you noticed any difference? Great video.

What kind of magnets did you use / where did you buy them??

I accidentally bought the 1 inch board. Do you think they will rub together at the seam?

You do realize the door you have is a steel back sandwich door? It is already insulated somewhere between r10.25-r17.65 depending on if it's styrene or urethane insulation
