Researchers have long known that our genes can predispose individuals to hypertension, but innovative research by Bina Joe, Ph.D., Distinguished University Professor and chair of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, has added to the equation the role of gut bacteria in regulating blood pressure. Researchers are working to better understand the microorganisms living in our bodies and how our gut can help treat and even prevent illnesses.
