In honor of the Mid-Autumn Festival (Moon Festival), Jasmine teaches us how to make mooncakes!

We’re mindful of how the current coronavirus outbreak might be affecting your access to stores and general grocery items. Please know that many of these videos were filmed before the outbreak and additional new videos filmed by our producers, working safely from their homes, may look and feel different than what you’re accustomed to. We don’t expect you to make all of our recipes now, but we hope you’ll find it a joyful distraction that’s entertaining, inspiring, and worth saving for a future food challenge or meal shared with friends.

I never understand how anyone could find them strange. They look like the most precious little delicacy.

Fun fact:
Moon cakes were made way back in ancient china, where a village was being ruled by a evil leader. the villagers wanted to rebel, but if the leader found out they would be executed, so they made cakes with paper messages inside them to communicate. on the lunar moon, the villagers gave each other the cakes, and they successfully rebelled against the evil leader.

To all who’s celebrating, Happy Mid Autumn Festival. 中秋節快樂!🥮🏮🌕

There’s different kinds of moon cakes in regions of China, and even some variations made by the ethnic Chinese in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. This is the Cantonese version, and the Hakka, Teochew and Hokkien dialect groups each have their own variations!

I'm from a small town. And when I moved to the city there was an Asian market that sold moon cakes. Liked the name I thought it was intresting. So I tried it. And for the last 12 years I've been eating moon cakes. They are one of my favourite treats and I'm so happy I decided to try it.

I used to give my teachers mooncakes in elementary school. They really liked it. Some even shared the mooncakes with other teachers during lunch while us kids are playing in recess.

My wish for the world is that everyone will learn to enjoy the differences in humanity and the wonderful things that each culture has to share.

I actually first heard about these cakes when I was a little girl from Sagwa the Chinese Cat (if anyone remembers that show 🤣). Ever since then I’ve always wanted to try them. They looked sooo delicious!!

My granny has those design stampers and she uses it to make Sandesh (a bengali sweet). I was surpriesd to know that they were actually used to make mooncakes.

Thank you for sharing such a beautiful part of your history and culture. I’m sorry that you ever felt you had to be ashamed of something so beautiful and precious. And I’m thrilled that you are sharing the beauty that is Chang’e and the Moon Festival🌕

I always loved eating Moon Cakes growing up, though I honestly never liked the egg yoke in the middle for some reason and would always give it to my parents. My favorite part of the treat was the paste.
I learned and read the myth/story from the book ‘Starry River of the Sky’ (or one of the books from the series, I don’t remember), though it would be a different iteration

(If you really like old Chinese myths, legends, and stories, I recommend reading the ‘Where the Mountain Meets the Moon’ series, it has a tone of stories, and an enjoyable book.)
