I owned this Seiko SPB157J1 "Baby" Alpinist 38mm for two years already and in this video, I will tell you how they performed. Do I still like this watch? What do I dislike about them? We will talk about that. And I hope this video would be helpful if you are considering this model or if you are looking for a good affordable field watch.

Love reviews. I got the spb121 for a few months now. I got more expensive watches but for some reason I love that the most. I have a 6.5 inch wrist and it just fits perfectly. I also got a green leather strap with it. So comfortable. I literally have been researching and going into shops for other watches but I still prefer the alpinist.

At 3:50 I fully agree about the 6R35. I have an SPB259J1 Ginza edition which runs within COSC standards, but my SPB155J1 green dial Baby Alpinist came back from Seiko repair still running poorly at minus 45 seconds per day. Orient do far better with their movements for consistency.

Good review. I got this watch as my first automatic almost 2 years ago. I really like the design, but the 6R35 really lets it down and has turned me off from buying any more Seiko automatics. It's a shame, because I really like a lot of their designs.

Another thing I would have liked would be for them to make the caseback thinner. It seems to stick out the back of the watch, causing it to sit kind of high.

I had the SAME issue with the 6R35… great in the beginning, slowed, stopped, and just today I dropped it off at the watchmaker. I’ve owned 30+ modern mechanical watches ranging from $60 to $5, 000, and this was the first movement to die out of nowhere on me. Very disappointing as the baby Alpinist was my go-to everyday wearer.

Remember seeing this model discounted at a AD for 400 euros, was tempted, but ended up walking away. I do want great accuracy and ended up with a seiko solar diver instead. Happy about my choice, still intrested in the alpinist lineup though

This is my field watch of choice. Possibly the Tudor Ranger.

I have the same watch and have worn it for the past 6 months. I'm really enjoying it, especially experiencing it on a variety of straps.
