President Donald Trump presented the nation's highest civilian honor to Dan Gable, a renowned wrestler and coach from Iowa who won a gold medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics.

Trump used an October campaign rally to announce the Presidential Medal of Freedom selection, bringing Gable on stage to the delight of the crowd as he sought to win over Iowa voters.

The ceremony Monday at the White House fulfilled that commitment. Gable is one of several sports figures to be presented the award during Trump's time in office.

Gable was a champion wrestler at Iowa State University, compiling a 117-1 record and winning two NCAA titles.

At the conclusion of Monday's ceremony, Trump was asked how his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani was feeling.

Trump said Sunday that Giuliani had tested positive for the coronavirus, making him the latest in Trump's inner circle to contract the disease that is now surging across the U.S.

Giuliani was exhibiting some symptoms and was admitted Sunday to Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, according to a person familiar with the matter who was not authorized to speak publicly.

The president told reporters he spoke with Giuliani on Monday.

"Rudy's doing very well," Trump said. "I just spoke to him. He's doing very well. No temperature."

The 76-year-old former New York mayor has traveled extensively to battleground states in an effort to help Trump subvert his election loss to Joe Biden. On numerous occasions he has met with officials for hours at a time without wearing a mask.

Trump also used the ceremony to, again, push his false narrative that he won the presidential election.

Dan Gable was my coach at Iowa. I spoke with him the Thursday after and asked him about Trump leaving he said he told the press all questions go to me. The press made it political and that’s why he left. Coach told me they met in the Oval Office before hand and talked for a while. Trump wrestled in high school for a year, but Don jr wrestled 8 years. He’s met Trump 7 or 8 times and said he’s an awesome guy and smart.

Dan Gable is a true champion on and off the mat. Great acceptance speech under difficult circumstances showed the champion you are. Dan’s love of family, community and the sport are evident in just those few minutes. Thanks for your years of tenacity and dedication to family, community and sport, to become a national and worldwide Olympic champion.Your genuine confidence and skills showed us that you’re a man of character, a champion who puts in the hard work and takes his wins with the disappointments. Dan Gable’s familiy-team is super too!

In all fairness, Trump did read his accomplishments and present the medal. However, whoever was in charge of the event could have informed the reporters that all questions will be focused only on Mr. Gable and the ceremony or not taking questions. But, I believe Trump could have stayed around a bit longer for some photos and meet the family.
