This is how I typically use the sharpmaker. Hope it helps! I had to split the video in 2 parts to get it to upload.

As a long time engineer, I do find it interesting how folks reckon they know better than those who designed, invested, developed and marketed this and other tools.

Comment regarding the edge of the sharpmaker displays a complete lack of understanding of the design of the contact area and why. The effect of the sharpening stroke is more concentrated at the apex for any constant effort from the user. This is why the 'corner' is used before the flat section which spreads the point of contact, thus making it less aggressive when progressively sharpening from scratch.

If you're just honing the edge, then it makes sense to gently use the flat sides. Using the apex of the triangle certainly does not give a wavy edge as reported by Tony Gold below. If all else is done correctly technique wise.

Personally, I find the Sharpmaker an excellent product if just honing, but I use the Lansky system for profiling blades as it's more effective (in my personal experience). Both systems are very good value for money IMHO. I recommend the diamond stones for both systems.

Good vid. I’ve owned one for several years and never really got the hang of it. This helped.

1st thanks for not using a spyderco knife like most of the other guys use.
Show you can use non spyderco knives.

How would you use the sharpmaker on knives with a belly or like hawk bills and not just stright blades

Sharpened my ZT 0770 on this today for the first time, it was quite dull, I decided just to make about 20 passes on the white stones at 40 degrees and the damn thing was cutting news book paper and arm hair like nothing.

very good vidio I also cant see why you would use the pointed part of the stone to me it would give you a wavey edge th as t you then have to correct with the flst sides also if you have the sharpener at waist hight and stand up you can see the edge of the blade better I lift the off the stone as I get to the curved part or the blade like tormek do when sharpening knivesl havent seen anybody els doing it like I do but it works and you can keep the knife straght everyone seems to find the way that is best for them I hold my knife in the normal manor otherwise you vidio is very good

Sir, a very good tutorial. However, it is my simple suggestion for your safety: use the safety rods.
Thank you Sir for your hard work in producing this video.
