Deep Waters is a 1948 American drama film directed by Henry King and starring Dana Andrews, Jean Peters and Cesar Romero. The film is based on the 1946 novel Spoonhandle written by Ruth Moore and was nominated for a 1949 Oscar for Best Special Effects (specifically, for the storm at sea sequence), but lost to Portrait of Jennie.

Plot
A Maine lobster fisherman, trained as an architect, prefers to be a fisherman over the objections of his fiancée. The latter, a welfare worker for the state, finds a home for a 12-year-old orphan who loves the sea. He and the fisherman become friends but the fiancée, fearful of the dangers of sea life, forces the fisherman to restrict the boy from his boat. Denied the life he loves, the boy, in retribution, steals a camera and is sent to reform school. The couple marries and succeeds in getting a judge to grant a petition allowing them to adopt the boy.

What an endearing movie, so glad I watched. I'm so thankful for the old movies--takes you back to a more genteel time where innocence and morals were more commonplace.

I grew up in a fishing town but when I had my children I ran to Colorado, middle of the states, to get away from the sea. So much loss and broken hearts - the sea, she doesn't give back what she takes for her own... I made a mistake and my boys have paid for it.
What a beautiful movie. Every scene reminded me of the life I had had, even as a girl - I miss the smells, sounds, and visions of it all -
Thanks for putting this charming film online, I wouldn't have missed it for the world! 💕

I love how they filmed the hearing live on location on a windy day, and you can hear the old building creaking.

Dean Stockwell was an amazingly gifted actor! Great story and all the actors were perfect, against the backdrop of an old New England fishing village!! And the great sea❤

This is the best Channel for the old B &W movies. You can have the movies made today. The early 40s thru the 50s were the best for suspense, mysteries, love them. Thanks for bringing some nostalgia back for us.

Never saw this one before & I really enjoyed it; various moments touched my heart & brought me to tears, especially the sweet ending. Dean Stockwell as a little fellow who played Donny did a superb job. Dana Andrews is one of my favorite actors. Every time I see him, I can't help but think of him in My Foolish Heart with the lovely Susan Haywood. Thanks for the upload. Keep the good ones coming!

Watched the whole thing and only at the end realised the kid was Dean Stockwell! What a talent he was, right from the start. Good film, enjoyed it quite a bit. Jean Peters' character was the polar opposite to the one she played in South Street Pick Up. Hardly recognised her.
