It's almost the weekend, but there are no weekends at NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission, which secures the skies 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Hungarian Air Force currently leads Baltic Air Policing, which safeguards the airspace over Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania from Šiauliai Air Base in Lithuania. Their JAS-39 Gripen fighters are on standby day and night, ready to scramble and investigate unidentified contacts passing near or through Allied airspace. Once alerted by NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre (CAOC) in Uedem, Germany, pilots have 15 minutes to get airborne.

Air policing is a peacetime activity conducted 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This is the third time since 2015 Hungary has led NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission.
