know IDA Coronavirus (COVID-19): infection control and prevention measures for dentist..
WHO has declared the COVID-19 or coronavirus to be a pandemic that can be transferred quickly from person to person by respiratory droplets.
Dental care settings and dental professionals constantly carry the high risk of infection due to face-to-face communication with patients, and frequent exposure to saliva, blood, and other body fluids, and the handling of sharp instruments.
Dental professionals need to take extra precautions to minimize the chance of exposures.
Here are some extra precautions we need to take being a dental health care professional
Take a detailed travel and health history, or breathing difficulties at the reception.
Take temperature readings as part of the routine assessment of patients before performing dental procedures.
Take the contact details and addresses of all patients treated.
Wear a surgical or procedure mask and eye protection and a gown for the procedures.
Avoid touching the eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after contact with patients or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
Dental personnel should use N95 respirators or respirators that offer a higher level of protection instead of a facemask when performing or present for an aerosol-generating procedure.
Use a rubber dam when appropriate to decrease possible exposure to infectious agents.
Use high-speed evacuation for dental procedures producing an aerosol.
Autoclave hand-pieces after each patient.
Have patients rinse with a 1% hydrogen peroxide solution before each appointment.
Clean and disinfect public areas frequently, including door handles, chairs and bathrooms.
However, following IDA’s recommendations will reduce exposure and add a layer of protection in an already high exposure career. We wish you stay proactive, informed and calm, to provide patients with the best dental care we have always provided. Stay safe out there.
